Hardanger Heart DVD from The Victoria Sampler - click for more Hardanger Heart DVD
By Thea Dueck of The Victoria Sampler, this is a DVD that features beginning Hardanger Embroidery instruction! Designed to complement the Count Your Blessings Stitcher's Etui pattern, you would need that leaflet if you were to do the entire Etui project... But I have a hunch that the Hardanger instructions in here will be invaluable, even if you choose not to do that particular pattern.

The heart shape is very basic... you'll learn easy Algerian Eyelets... it promises stress-free cutting (!), Easy Blanket Stitches, Weaving the perfect Dove's Eye and making perfect Bullion Knots. If you're the kind that needs pictures to help you... or the quiet of your own stitching space to absorb things... this DVD is for YOU!

Quilters' Travel Companion - 11th Edition 2010-2012 - click for moreQuilters' Travel Companion - 11th Edition 2010-2012
The newest edition of this wonderful travel guide for any quilter - or lover of fabrics and stitching - has arrived in the shop. It is 640 pages in soft cover format that lists shops in all 50 states; shops in all the Canadian provinces; and, even shops in The Bahamas! Wow!! There are over 2050 featured shops and 450 of those have never been included in this publication before.

Each state has a map showing the location of the shops along the highway system and each location is cleverly numbered so that you know exactly which shop corresponds to which city on the map. The shops are listed alphabetically by city with their address and phone number. Some of the shops have advertisements included in the book and just a few do not. There are pages for each state's quilt shows, too!

This is book is mesmerizing! You can spend hours looking at the advertisements - seeing the location of shops on the maps - and reading about the various quilting festivals and exhibits throughout our country and Canada. If you are planning a road trip (or even if you plan on staying home and ordering by phone or the web) this is a must for all needleworkers!

WOW... this is a reference book that is crammed FULL of excellent information... just like its title promises! After beginning with some *Words of Wisdom* by Marion Scoular "Friends don't look at the back of your needlework!"... this goes on to address your needlework Tool Bag, the ergonomics of comfortable stitching, fabric and thread sizes and counts, (and conversions), and a lesson about thread composition.

Then, we get into the actual stitching... starting, changing and ending threads, Blankets vs Buttonholes, cutting and finally washing and ironing needlework. *WHAT IS THE BEST, however.. is the 11-page section (with actual photos of unfortunate circumstances!) of THINGS THAT GO WRONG... and how to fix them!!! Absolutely amazing... this section address all your worst nightmares about messing up with Hardanger! Author Carol Pedderson has photographed *painful* pieces, and then shows us how to fix them!

VERY well done... even if you know everything there is to know about Hardanger Embroidery... and have nothing else left to learn on the subject... you *will* glean some great Tips, Tricks and Fix-Its from this book! A Must-Have for your library!

This 36-page book is just breathtakingly beautiful! Monochromatic florals -- pictures stitched in one single family of colors -- this book offers pillows, coasters, eyeglass cases... lots of different finishing applications for several different designs. Bold patterns of grape clusters, birds, leaves and blossoms, the shading is just awesome on these.

Each chart is coded for 5 different color-ways -- 7 shaded colors in each. Since these are suitable for cross stitch OR needlepoint... everything can turn out so differently from another! Just lovely, and very sophisticated... this is our second shipment of this publication... because the shop gals 'cleaned us out' with the first shipment!!!

A Rainbow of Stitches - click for moreA Rainbow of Stitches
I'm not sure how to describe this book... but it sure is AWESOME!!! I think it's French in flavor, because all the authors and photographer have very French names. Inside... it features cross stitch motifs, and tons of line drawings for embroidery and primitive stitch. Everything in the entire book is stitched in one color -- there is a green section, red, blue, white and pink... 230-ish pages of lovely pictures and clean, fresh, young and some 'Paris-y' designs!!!

Lovely finishing ideas, charming designs... it has over 1000 different motifs inside. Little dogs, lacy borders, florals alphabets, nautical, kitchen, baby, cats and birds... this is one of those books that shows you something different each time you page through it! Enchanting!!!!!!

Oh Gosh... this is the cutest set of designs! 'Smirk' is the darling little girl featured in each design... this book has 52 of her!!!!!!! Each design finishes approx 4 x 6, and actually features very little in the way of stitching.

The Left-Handed Embroiderer's Companion - click for moreThe Left-Handed Embroiderer's Companion
WOW... AT LAST... a stitch diagram book for us Left-Handed Stitchers!!!!!!!!! This is a beautifully presented, 160 page, softcover book of embroidery stitches. 73 Different stitches are diagrammed with multiple illustrations, and each stitch is photographed as well, so you can see how it really looks. Awesome to me, because as a 'Lefty' we learn to look at things in a different way, and our eye simply has to adapt to the standard right-handed drawings.

This book has the needle in the RIGHT PLACE to my eye! It's going in the *right direction* to me... I GET it! If you are left-handed, or know someone who is... GET THIS BOOK! It is an absolute delight to page through... author Yvette Stanton of Australia is one of us 'Leftys' and she's done a lovely job with this book.

Leisure Arts Spell it Out -- click to see moreSpell it Out
Joan Elliott has a new book -- 52 pages full! -- of novelty alphabets! Each features a chart for the Capital (upper case) letter... and the entire alphabet of matching lower case letters. Darn cute... you get Redwork, Gardeners, Christmas Folk Art, Puppies, Kitties, Tumbling Teddy Bears, Harvest, Pirates, Fairies, and Art Nouveau.

Cute alphabets... we suggest 'em to make bedroom door signs to keep TRESPASSERS *out* of 'un-welcoming' OTHER bedrooms!!! Your kids and grandkids will love what their name looks like! Offered as the book.

140 Cross Stitch designs... this 112 page book features TONS of what I call 'Oldy-Moldy' designs that people *still call for* because they've seen them 20 years ago, and want to stitch them NOW! You get The Praying Hands, 5 Olde Worlde Santas, tons of baby things, JAR LIDS! (can you believe that?!), The Holiday House with interchangeable motifs for the front door.

I'd say this book appeals to the 'older cross stitch crowd'... if you're 'into fresh and new'... go to Lizzie Kate! If you want something for Mom to stitch... THIS book is for her!

Every page is stuffed with pictures of antique needlework thread cards, winders, spools, bobbins, advertisements, color cards, labels, needle packets... you name it.

The very BEST part of this book, however, is that while it is in French, it is ALSO IN ENGLISH!!! I can read everything!!!!!!!! So... I can now devour the history lessons delivered on each page that match the pictures! Every page has a history lesson about the products and packaging featured. So many shop advertisements and promotional cards and materials... so much information... I had absolutely no idea much of this existed in days gone by!!!

Original publishing date on this one is 1998 -- so that should be an indication. Good stuff tucked into these 49 pages of classic alphabets.

Wow... some of these repeat from Galore! I've just discovered that in browsing through this one! Still really good stuff in here, there is a cat alphabet with fish bones, and anchors with fishes, cows, clowns.

Clouds/rainbows/thunder (for the meteorologist in your life!!!), band-aids/aspirin/and shot pins (for the nurse in your life!), and EVEN teeth and little toothpaste tubes for the dentist in your life!!! Such clever fonts!

Better Homes & Gardens Heirloom Christmas Stockings
Snowy Friends Trio by Lorri Birmingham Designs. Click to see all 9 stockings -- a big file!
Holy Cow... This wonderful softcover compilation of nine of the most favored Christmas Stocking patterns EVER published... is available again!!! Originally appearing annually in Cross Stitch and Country Crafts Magazines beginning in the late 1980's... we were treated to a new stocking every year... for 10-12ish, years, I think... until the Magazine and publishing rights ceased. For a few years following, leaflets of the stockings were available... then they stopped. Then this particular book came out... and it went out of print shortly thereafter.

So, to make a long story short, this collection has been very hard to get -- all at one time -- for quite some time!!! Beautiful pictures, nice charts, all in 64 pages! Even if your stash already has some of these charts, get this book!!! You'll never be sorry you did! Each stocking is stitched on 25ct Lugana and measures approx 11 x 17, stitched in DMC flosses. Definitely family heirlooms, the nine featured are the Workshop, North Woods, Music Room, Kitchen, Home, Sugar and Spice, Stitcher's Studio, Toys & Games, and Study!!!

Backgrounds -- The CD - click to see moreBackgrounds -- The CD!
Brought to you by the gals who've done the Stitches CD set of stitch diagrams, Ruth Schmuff and Janice McGuire has compiled a WHOPPING 481 repeat patterns to use as background options for both linen and canvas work! Mac/PC compatible, it uses Adobe Acrobat Reader, and opens to offer you printable pages of each pattern. Not lots of 'wording' to bog you down... this is *Down and Dirty Stitching Meat!*

So much more portable than a big, fat, heavy book... the patterns are wonderful when you need just a little something extra in the way of interest or texture for a particular area of stitching. Even though the title suggests only Backgrounds... the stitches are applicable anywhere! Fresh and new, introduced at the 2008 Summer Trade Show!

Beginner's Guide to Drawn Thread Embroidery -- click to see a larger viewBeginner's Guide to Drawn Thread Embroidery
A lovely new book by Patricia Bage (of Patricia Ann Designs), this is a 64 page soft cover publication full of wonderful pictures and instructions -- all of Drawn Thread Embroidery. It begins with all the necessary information about fabrics, needles, threads and stitching frames. After all the threading, beginning and ending of stitches info, beading techniques and stitch diagrams... 4 beautiful projects are featured!

Drawn Thread Embroidery deals with actually removing threads (the Drawn part) in the middle of your fabric, and then executing knots and stitches around the empty areas (the Pulled part) to create lacy, open areas, and lots of texture to your pieces. Such a sense of accomplishment when you finish a row or two... and nothing ravels... and it's all straight!!!

Tons of designers feature bits of Drawn Thread Embroidery in their pieces -- they just don't TELL you that's what it is! Shepherd's Bush does... The Drawn Thread does, Needles Prayse does, Indigo Rose likes it, Periwinkle Promises uses it, and I think The Sweetheart Tree does Drawn Thread techniques sometimes, too! So, you probably know some of this already! This book will open your stitching eyes to so many new possibilities... you'll love it!
Note: expect a January or February 2008 delivery on this book.

Taking Punch Needle Embroidery to the next level, this is Pamela's Gurney's companion book to our favorite 'Dancing Needles' edition. Punch Needle Embroidery offers so much texture in stitching, you can use almost any type of thread, and this book shows you how!

Beginning with needle types, hoops, etc, through pages and pages of general technique and hints for perfect results, she goes further into 'special effects' so to speak!

(In reading through this, it involves turning that beveled edge on the needle.) She covers Sculpting, Shaping and Fluffing, and then travels on to punch in flosses, wools, silk ribbon, even 2-ply acrylic yarn!!!

An excellent source of information... if you're a 'book-a-holic' you need this. Curious... you'll want this. To the Basic Puncher... pretty to look at, delightful to hold... this shows you what to punch next, after all your current projects are done!!! Softcover, 184 pages.

Searchable by type of stitch or name... you could get carried away with this using your needle and thread... or with simply the clip art images!!!

Think about creating stitch guides for your next sampler! Think about making stitching stationery, by using these stitch diagrams and shrinking them down to put on note cards or place cards, or gift tags, or signature plates to attach to backs of framed pieces! Who says 'ya gotta stitch' everything in your stash!!!??? Perfect, lightweight reference for your laptop and stitch bag! CD number one is available below.

Stitches CD
Hey, this is a totally useful and practical thing brought to you from Ruth Schmuff and Kathy Holicky -- Stitch Goddesses of the Needlework Industry! A CD of 300 stitch diagrams, presented in PDF format -- so they're perfect for printing -- this thing has no idle chatter to bore you -- only 300 different stitch diagrams. Each is alphabetized in the contents, and fully numbered and diagrammed for you. What I like is the diagram that shows multiple stitches worked together, so you can see pattern texture... compensating stitches... that sort of thing.

Doing a sampler design to share with friends??? Print as many stitch diagrams as you wish... (you aren't allowed, by copyright laws to Xerox stitch diagrams from books or from the leaflets you buy)... this is perfect for you! At $33, it's pricey simply for a CD... but considering the research this has taken, and its ease of transport vs a heavy reference book, and the ability to print stitch diagrams from it... it's worth the investment. Nicely done... the title, Volume One, hints at more to come!!!

'Knotty Girl' Teresa Layman has produced an educational DVD to teach you her fine art of miniature knots!!! Just like sitting in front of her for a private class, you'll learn how to make beautiful, well-formed French and Colonial Knots, the strange mechanics of these sometimes-frustrating knots, how to deal with unwanted ones, how to shade them... all sorts of cool stuff!

'Knot in your wildest dreams' would you have figured that you, too, could do these.. we are KNOT fibbing!

Knots, Fur and Turkey Work
A brand new book by Meredith Bamhill Willett and Beth Robertson, this is a beautiful publication printed on super-glossy paper and stuffed full of awesome, clear, pretty and current pics! The book delves into textured stitches that are used on canvas and linen. 28 Pages of fabulous, creative applications for both threads and stitches... I'd never heard of Faux and Cork-Screw Bullions, Sorbello Stitches, and Detached Woven Picots -- and when you see the up-close pics of what the different threads do for the stitches -- you'll be amazed!

The color pictures of thread and stitch applications are all fresh, 2005-ish projects -- I hate to open stitch books that show projects that look like they're 25 years old. These are fresh, current applications, with current threads. For instance, I know that Flair by Rainbow Gallery ravels like the dickens. This book shows an application for hair that features that raveled fiber!!! You can even shade it! (Who knew!?) Very, very nicely done!

Sampler Motifs and Symbolism
By Hillside Samplings

This is a beautifully done hardcover book that encompasses facinating info and 'trivia' about American and European sampler motifs found on works in the earlier centuries! There are 61 pages of 500 motifs listed alphabetically -- each with a brief description of it's meanings or history, and charts for 135 of them.

At first, I thought... oh, these charts aren't something that I'd really use sometime... but upon reading through the pages... I couldn't put it down! Did you know that a crab is a symbol of deceipt and cruelty because of the way is was thought to prey on oysters? (I love crab dip... I'd never think anything bad about a crab!) Did you know that each of the 9 digits has specific meanings? And moths... they're frivoulous... they flutter around light, and are associated with the consumption of wealth, because they consume cloth!!! This book has pages and pages of cool things to learn! Following the dictionary, are five sampler charts that are full of those borders and motifs you've just learned so much about. I am really impressed with this book... if you ever want to design a family heirloom, or are simply a sampler-lover... you need this book! 95 Pages.
