Here is a sampling of a lovely collection of designs by Italian designer Guilia Manfredini. From Massa, a small town in Tuscany, not far from Pisa and the seacoast, we are treated to Italy through her needlework! Guilia is a Doctor of Nuclear Medicine and an Endocrinologist by trade... and a wife, mom and needle artist all the rest of the time!
I was drawn to her work because of the Deruta Majolica (pronounced ma-jol'-i-ca, with the emphasis on jol, all short sounds on the vowels) patterns and beads she offers... but there is so much more here to enjoy! Biscornu designs, sewing caskets, etui patterns... lots of silks and overdyed color, pretty handmade clay flower pins that adorn many projects... no one specialty of designs... just a world of wonderful things... all the way from a charming part if Italy! |
Antique Flowers Sewing Set from Simona Bussiglieri
Italy's Simona Bussiglieri has designed a charming sewing case set -- offered in chart format -- it includes three hand-made clay-topped pins of little tulips! Stitched on 32ct, the three colors of DMC -- 936, 677 and 422 -- are so soft, you could change them to overdyeds, easily. The case features scissor and thread pockets inside -- the pic shows some bluebell thread rings -- 'a serving suggestion!' The matching octagonal pin cushion has a large covered button treatment in the center -- that's kind of fun and different! You'll need to find some pretty lining fabric to match your threads, and that 1-inch button form to cover for the cushion... just a charming set -- the booklet measures approx 4 x 6, cushion about 4 x 4. Finishing instructions included.

Tokens from Italy -- A Sampler for Lindy
Giulia Manfredini designed this charming sampler for The Silver Needle! We spent the day with Giulia a few weeks ago, when SN took a group of 72 on a cruise to Italy and France. Standing on the waterfront in Liguria, Italy... the morning of our day together in Cinque Terra, Giulia presented us with her sampler, inspired by antique Italian motifs! Such a lovely day... and a pretty piece to remember it by. Measuring 10 x 18 on 28ct Antique Tan linen, this is worked with a special color set of Valdani hand dyed Italian Flosses. There are two of rows of Cut and Drawn Threadwork, rows of geometric waves -- they remind me of the marble carvings on all the cathedrals we saw, and Roman Numerals -- not regular numbers!!! Giulia even added a picture to the back of the chart to SHOW you where we spent our awesome day together! So... we share a bit of our Cruise and trip to Italy with you!!!

Three Baskets: A Stitcher's Sewing Set
This is a charming set of designs that fits on top, inside of, and around the sides of a trio of woven baskets you can find online at ikea.com! (I believe the baskets are named 'Fryken,' so put that in the search box on that website.) You'll need a fat quarter yard of 32ct linen to stitch this fun set of bands, lids and smalls... there are 13 different stitched pieces in all! Coded for 16 colors of Stitches & Spice hand-dyed flosses of Australia, we have them... but if you don't want to use those threads, I'm sure your stash of overdyed will work beautifully! Peacocks, flower urns, a family, fir trees, little birds and whatnots... all are scattered like small samplers on each of the pieces. Offered as the chart, there is a floral Waxer piece and set of Butterfly Couture flower pins that are pictured on the pattern. We have them as well, and are offering them separately! Just a really sweet set of pieces, even the baskets are cool! (Note: Large basket has top area of approx 5-1/2 inches... you might even have a cute 'unadorned' basket somewhere just waiting to be dressed!)

A Basket for Kris
This is a neat set of cases, keepers, cushions, all fitting inside a decorated basket or box. A family-inspired sampler design, add your initials, those of your children, a few special dates here and there... everything matches, so it's fun to personalize each piece with different information! The main sampler that can wrap around your box or basket can be as big as 5-1/4 x 29-1/4. The smalls run in the 2, 3 and 4 inch range, needlebook is 4 x 8-1/2. The whole set is garnished with a set of brick red, slate blue, cream and butterscotch-colored handmade clay buttons. You see the collection of 16 of them scattered everywhere... and then there is a matching set of flower-topped stick pins as well! A cute collection of designs, dedicated to Giulia's friend, Kris!

Sewing Purse Set
This is a lovely set of needlework patterns, all finished into a simple, yet elegant purse, with matching needle book, scissor sheath, scissor fob and biscornu cushion. Inspired by the handpainted Deruta Italian Majolica Pottery beads that are included with the chart, Giulia commissioned the beads through the Academy of Deruta Work in Umbria, Italy, then designed the sewing pieces to match! You can see the square medallion on the purse front -- it measures approx 1-1/2 inches square, and matches the round-ish Fuseruola bead that adorns the scissor fob. Lovely, rich colors of deep lavender, black and caramel, the pieces are all stitched with Gentle Art Sampler Threads of Gold Leaf, Hyacinth, Apple Cider, Raven and Weathered Barn, on 32ct Cream Belfast linen. Complete instructions are given for the purse assembly, but you could put that main band around a basket, if you'd rather. Just a pretty set of designs... the pottery beads that come with it are stunning!!!

Blue Romance Sewing Set and Purse
This is a sweet set of small designs that can adorn all sorts of small needlework pieces and cases! Included in the set of charts, are designs and finishing instructions for the woolen purse (Weeks Houndstooth in Dove), a darling little thread palette case, and a fun little scissor sheath that is actually a covered thread spool! It comes with its very own (made especially for this set) three-piece set of tiny tan and aqua checkered heart pins, from Butterfly Couture of France! Easy stitching, and easy finishing techniques -- I took Giulia's class at Market a few weeks ago -- and this Set was our class project! So... the whole thing is special... and it reminds me of a really fun day I had 'playing' instead of 'working!'

Vario Biscornu
If you are a lover/collector of Italian pottery, you'll recognize the name Deruta. Originating in the beautiful old town of Umbria -- in Italy, Deruta pottery has been made there for hundreds of years. Giulia Manfredini, an Italian designer (medical doctor and mom in her other real life) commissions exclusive Deruta beads and designs needlework pieces to go with them! We present one of her newest pieces... The Vario Biscornu! I'm not sure which came first -- the awesome bead -- or the needlework borders that surround this lovely cushion... but what does that matter? Your pattern includes the hand-painted teal, purple and mustard majolica bead that measures approx 1-1/4 inches in diameter x 3/8 inch thick, along with a coordinating plain purple bead for the cushion's central decoration. Stitched on 28ct, the stitched area measures almost 7 inches in size. After the biscornu is finished... the overall size is a bit smaller... closer to 5 x 5. Absolutely stunning to anyone who loves Deruta... we have majolica pins to match!!! Offered as the chart with pair of center beads.

Ornate Mother-of-Pearl Thread Winder
What an intricate and exquisite thread winder to tuck into one of your
special sewing cases!!! Gently curved, a mere 2 x 2 of fillagreed detail,
isn't it pretty?
|
 Majolica Thimbles and Teardrops
Giulia has brought me more hand-painted Italian thimbles, and just 7 lovely majolica teardrops to match. The 'real thing', stitchers... look at that exquisite bead! Sterling findings embellish both the top and bottom... so lovely to adorn a special scissor or heirloom purse or scissor case... the thimbles match, and I have a few pins as well. This pattern matches the Vario Biscornu, too. I really can't describe how lovely these pieces are... but I can tell you how happy my personal stash is tonight!!!
|
Byzantine Bead
I have 6 of these... Italian hand-painted majolica with *gold leaf!* The bead is 7/8 an inch in diameter and 5/8 an inch in thickness. It probably appeals only to a bead lover, who doesn't need MY words to have fallen
in love!
|
Deruta Scissor Pouch
The designs offered in this pack match biscornu charts farther along on our Giulia pages. Very traditional Deruta majolica patterns featured on Italian pottery, you are offered both colorways (click the image to see them both) in the charts... and one bead set to finish your case. Finishing approx 3 x 6, each case has three solid beads, and the decorated one to decorate your scissors. Simple cross stitches and finishing... the charm of these pieces is not lost on Deruta pottery lovers!
|
Stitcher's Evening Bags Italian Bouquets and The Frog Prince
Here is a pair of designs for a needlework purse and accessories set... two completely different designs... finished in the same fashion. Giulia (mom) has designed floral bouquets that adorn the tops of the purse, tape measure
box, and pin cushions. Sophia (daughter) has designed a charming Frog Prince story for her handbag set! Both packages include charts for all the different pieces, a set of Butterfly Couture handmade french clay pins, and a floral molded/embossed beeswax thread waxer. So over-the-top unique... so verrrry custom and charming... you'll never see a copy of these! Judy O'Dell of Just A Thought Finishing offers a finishing instructional folio for these pieces. A definite if you purchase one of the charts!
|
Everlasting Love -- An Antique Purse
Giulia Manfredini has a favorite antique purse that she has re-created in chart format! A very specialized piece, complete finishing instructions with a million pictures are included inside the pattern. Lots of pieces, lots of sides, SO VERY UNIQUE... we have that mother-of-pearl thread winder featured in the chart picture. I've held the actual antique purse that inspired this design... it's about 5 x 8... One is just left in awe at the talents that made these things over 100 years ago. Then... HOW could
they be loved and kept track of... never lost or misplaced... always treasured... then re-born again... the old still here... beside the new. Awesome! Offered as the chart with complete assembly instructions!

Clay Pins by Butterfly Couture
Directly from France, we have *just a few* of these darling, delicate pins... handmade of polymer clay. I classify these as 'hard to get' because the artist doesn't make all her styles all through the year! I can get Spring during the Springtime! Christmas later in the year -- not now! So... we don't have specific designs that call for these... but you'll see them gracing a few of our European designs. Really cute, really fun and unique... get 'em while you CAN! We do have a few other floral sets in the shop baskets - just not enough to feature on the website -- some are 3-Dimensional flowers -- you might want to call for availability -- or just trust us to choose some for you! (I notice that our Pansy sets feature assorted pansy colors. All feature 2 pansy and 2 clover pins.)
|
Santa's Ride
What an endearing little Santa Claus riding through the snow-frosted landscape, atop his trusty reindeer! (change that nose stitch, and Santa is riding on Rudolph!) Giulia's creation is stitched on Weeks Dye Works 35ct hand-dyed Mocha linen, and uses Sampler Threads, finishing approx 6 x 6-1/2 inches. It is finished into an easel stand-up -- you could frame it, cube it, pillow it -- but what adds to the overall charm of the piece is the 'tufting' on the front! It reminds you of a little mattress!!! Pretty colors, a lovely, flowing design with the 'layers and layers' of different greens, it really has caught our eye in the shop, and we all love it! Offered as a chart.
|
Christmas Sewing Set
This is such a unique sewing set... Christmas is in the title... but it's something lovely to display and use all year long! Giulia's design features a tiny 6-inch slipper that holds a thread palette and thimble,
there is a matching scissor case and tiny fob as well. All stitched on Weeks Dye Works 35ct Parchment linen in DMC and Weeks hand-dyed flosses, the pattern is offered as the chart, with loads of finishing templates and full instructions. In her notes, Giulia describes her 'vision' of designing a sewing set... but she *just couldn't stumble on just the right thing!* She was sitting on her sofa, legs crossed, impatiently swinging her foot, when her slipper dropped off that foot... A SIGN! The design developed in bed at night -- while she should have been sleeping instead! ALWAYS a great time to think, think, think!!! Offered as a chart.
|
Katy's Purse
A delightful sewing case, that features a family motif, although there aren't initials inside, you could add those of all your family inside! Stitched on Weeks 30ct Linen, in overdyed shades of Weeks flosses, there are special stitches, a needlebook pattern, fob piece, just a really fun little piece! Lots of room to store the Kelmscott thread rings and ruler, and your other treasures! Offered as the chart, with complete finishing instructions and all the pins.

Seasonal Faces -- Biscornu Cushions for The Four Seasons!A team effort by Italian designers Guilia Manfredini and Maria Teresa Vitali, these pin cushions are STUNNING!!! Pretty seasonal florals of thistles, roses and acorns, their Biscornu shape is fast becoming a finishing favorite these days! Two squares of linen, sewn together... the corners are simply offset! Offered as charted designs, Guilia and Maria have split the seasons... Spring and Summer are offered together in one set, and Autumn with Winter in the other. Each cushion features stitching on both sides, a lovely Mother-of-Pearl button in both centers, and 4 awesome, handmade pins, decorated with clay flowers on the tops. You see
those decorating 4 of the corners... so if you flip over your cushion...
move the pins to the four corners that are NOW facing up! Stitched on 32ct Cream Belfast linen, the stitching is minimal, and complete finishing
instructions are provided -- actual photographs and everything! Notice
the beaded edges... that looks hard, but it's NOT! Charming... you get two
charts, two buttons, four pins and finishing instructions in each package... for $35.00! (When you back out of that...the buttons are $3 to $5 each... the pins are $10-ish a set, so I think these are a wonderful value... and they've come all the way from Italy!)
NOTE: The Spring-Summer Set is temporarily out of stock. New shipment is expected in late July.

Deruta Biscornu Designs
By Italian designer Guilia Manfredini, come these two lovely Biscornu-shaped pin cushions inspired by the historic majolica pottery of Italy. (Roots back to the 15th century, with designs inspired by Raphael... I collect Deruta pottery... and I HAD to have all of these! majolica is pronounced ma-jol'-i-ca) Classic colors of yellows, golds, aqua and navy blues, Guilia has commissioned beads by the Academy of Deruta Work, and then designed her biscornus to match them! Offered as charts with the majolica beads included, they are stitched in 32ct Ecru
Belfast Linen in Sampler Threads, each finishing approx 4-1/2
square. Simply lovely stitched pieces that mirror history, we have scissor cases and pin cushion designs to match, as well as more of the Deruta beads, so you can make matching scissor tassels!!! Enjoy your 'stitching trip to Italy!'
|
Deruta Pin Cushion
Guilia's next design is inspired by her commissioned beads. Deruta, a beautiful old town in Umbria, Italy is home to the Deruta 'factory' that makes Italian majolica pottery. The information Guilia shares says that
'little is known of Deruta's origin and ancient history.' , which just makes all this that much more facinating to me!
Designed to match the
biscornus, this cushion design is stitched on 32ct Linen in shades of Sampler Threads. (Belle Soie silks would be awesome, too!) Anyway, the
chart comes with the exquisite pottery beads, and the finished cushion measures approx 2-1/4 x 4. You could make it squattier if you wish... just
keep that majolica bead and your lovely stitches highlighted!
|
Deruta Scissor Case
The matching little sheath in this exquisite collection of Italian needlework... your scissors will be so happy in here!!! Stitched with the same classic yellows and golds, aqua and navy blues of the Deruta pottery,
this piece is stitched on 32ct Belfast and coordinates with Guilia's
biscornus, pin cushion, majolica beads and thimbles -- which are
highlighted next!
Finishing approx 1-1/2 x 3 inches, the chart comes with the majolica beads and finishing instructions... charming!
|
Deruta majolica Thimbles
OHHHH... more and more... we are offering a smattering of open-stock thimbles to match Guilia's cushions, biscornus and scissor sheaths! The thimbles are simply a MUST to go with the rest of your stitched pieces! Each is unique, each is hand painted by Deruta... no two are alike... and I want them ALL!!!

Rose per Chicca Sewing Set
This is a pretty set of needlework cases and fobs... the main band is designed to lay over the arm of your chair -- offering the attached pin cushion at the top. There is a matching scissor pocket, a tiny fob, and needlebook... all stitched on 32ct Olive Green Belfast Linen. Designed for Guilia's friend, Chicca -- who owns a needlework shop in Milan, Italy, this is lovely!
The central pin cushion is embellished with 6 hand made clay-headed pins of burgandy roses! Offered as the chart, with complete finishing instructions and the lovely french rose pins.
|
Isotta's Biscornu
Designed by Guilia and offered in chart form, there is quite a bit of history associated with this design! Isolla was the wife of the Seignoir of Rimini around 1432... and all the motifs and colors in this little piece are significant to their family. (There's a whole paragraph about it
included in the chart! I'm always facinated when I open these things up to
study them while I write you my words about it!)
Stitched on 28ct Cream Linen, it finishes approx 3 x 3, and is embellished with exquisite
Mother-of-Pearl buttons in the center, and 6 hand-made French rose
pins!
|
Mary Queen of Scots Needle Casket
Designed by Guilia, this piece is inspired by loads of history -- lots of it is included in the chart's story! The same shape and size as Sophia's Casket, each side of this sophisticated piece is decorated with needlework, and it holds the same charming roll, bag and cushion pieces. This piece features three hand-made thistle-topped pins, that I believe garnish the cushion. Very different, very cool, we are offering the chart and pin set.
