Autumn Willow One of several new Hillside releases... I love this charming willow tree 'dripping' with Lazy Daisy branches wilting down to the Scotch-Stitched grass and hand-dyed pumpkins! Smyrna Crosses in the border, Satin in the tree trunk, this petite piece is stitched on 40ct Sandstone linen using Weeks overdyeds of Cocoa, Kudzu, Whiskey, Carrot and Chrysanthemum, and it is stunning!!!
Finishing a mere 4 x 5 on the 40ct... it can be larger if you choose a different fabric. The special stitches give lots of texture and interest in this. Offered as a leaflet... check out all the other new things by Hillside as well!

Bittersweet Farm A calming white farmhouse tucked into the hills of fall grass and pumpkins... this is a fun Fall piece that is stitched on 32ct Country Mocha Belfast linen in shades of Weeks overdyed flosses. TONS of Rhodes and Elongated Cross Stitch variations make up the pumpkins, trees, and cornstalks... so cool on smaller count fabrics in a pic like this!
Finishing only 3 x 5-1/2 on 32ct, this is offered as a
leaflet. Great balance, fun stitches, awesome color!!!

Be You to Others Sampler Timeless flavor... awesome floral border... pretty central house motif... lacy trees... and tiny sheep grazing in the zig-zag front yard... this piece has lots of antique sampler charm and appeal! Smatterings of easy special stitches for a little extra interest, on 28ct this finishes a serious 18 x 18 inches!!!
You'll definitely see this one on your wall, and it'll be a showstopper! Charted in DMC and Anchor flosses... you might want to venture into a few overdyeds, too! Offered as the chart.

A Child's Commandments Taking on an antique flavor... I see this piece hanging in the youth area at your local church. A beautiful border surrounds these gently-worded commandments, while the pics at the bottom depict Moses' life from the beginning --floating in the river -- to the end -- the burning bush.
Stitched on 28ct, this is huge, and finishes approx 17 x 23. Charted for DMC flosses, it is offered as the chart.

School of Handworke The charming sampler is offered in kit format with the little painted house box, can really enhance your stash! Stitched on 32ct Flax Belfast linen using Weeks and DMC threads, it finishes approx 9 x 11, and features several specialty stitches like Algerian Eye, Smryna, Herringbone and Cross-Tied Windmill.
Very pretty colors, the piece is shown surrounded by
a piece of salmon-colored satin ribbon -- kind of a matting idea. I think a deep green suede mat and deep antiqued frame would be luscious!

Fruit Samplings
A companion to Seasonal, Animal and House Samplings, this is a leaflet that features bits of over-one stitching, some special stitches, and the four coordinating 3-inch designs. Stitch them individually, side by side horizontally or vertically... or two by two!

Flower Samplers Book I
Honeysuckle, Rose, Thistle and Lily, the second book, scheduled to release later in 2006, will feature Tulips, Pansies and Carnations. Small 4 x 6 pieces, stitched in Crescent Colours overdyed flosses, each features special stitches in it's alphabet section. Funky, stylized borders and flowers... I can't decide whether these are contemporary, or really antique-y looking!!!

Folk Art Sewing Roll KitHillside Samplings' Limited Edition design and kit for 2006 is really unusual and very cute! The complete kit contains the chart, wooden wall pocket, 32ct Flax Linen, flosses, ribbon and antique shoe button embellishment, linings, interfacings and finishing instructions to make the tiny three-fold sewing case featured. After you stitch the delightful little sewing case... you get to tuck it into the wooden wall pocket that is hand-painted to match your case, by Liberty Hill! The wooden pocket is signed and numbered -- there are only 1000 of these in the whole wide world! Measuring 4 x 2-3/4 x 9... the stitched case is a mere 2 x 3 when closed. Peaceful, pastoral colors of terra cotta, greens, brown and creams... this is quite creative and a neat piece -- a neat way -- to show off your needlework!

Folk Art Hornbook
The 2005 annual special release kit by Hillside and Liberty Hill has arrived! Each year, we are treated to some sort of hand-painted box, palette or this year, a hornbook, by Liberty Hill that features a matching cross-stitch sampler piece by Hillside to go with it! The 2005 Hornbook is a 5 x 6 wooden 'paddle' featuring a hand-painted pastoral scene on one side... and a blank back.
The Hillside Samplings design, stitched on 32ct Lambswool, is worked in Black Crow Sampler Threads. It's full of special stitches, and when finished... fits onto the back of the hornbook. Reminiscent of sampler schools, hornbooks were used as textbooks, if you will. They stored written information in a handy format for young students. Each painted 'paddle' is signed and numbered by the artist! The complete kit contains the hornbook, chart, linen, threads, and finishing instructions.
The 2004 Kit and 2003 Kit were offered at this Spring's Needlework Market! I had thought they were retired... so I bought as many as I could!!! You're in for a treat!!!

Sampler Motifs and Symbolism
This is a beautifully done hardcover book that encompasses facinating info and 'trivia' about American and European sampler motifs found on works in the earlier centuries! There are 61 pages of 500 motifs listed alphabetically -- each with a brief description of it's meanings or history, and charts for 135 of them.
At first, I thought... oh, these charts aren't something that I'd really use sometime... but upon reading through the pages... I couldn't put it down! Did you know that a crab is a symbol of deceipt and cruelty because of the way is was thought to prey on oysters? (I love crab dip... I'd never think anything bad about a crab!) Did you know that each of the 9 digits has specific meanings? And moths... they're frivoulous... they flutter around light, and are associated with the consumption of wealth, because they consume cloth!!! This book has pages and pages of cool things to learn! Following the dictionary, are five sampler charts that are full of those borders and motifs you've just learned so much about. I am really impressed with this book... if you ever want to design a family heirloom, or are simply a sampler-lover... you need this book! 95 Pages.
