Primitive Traditions
|
| Primitive Traditions has a lovely collection of samplers. Lovely for framing... there are lots of other finishing options demonstrated here. I LOVE the Sarah Elliott's Sewing Chest -- so many different pieces in there! Then, note the Needfuls Sets. Eyeglass cases, Checkbook Covers and little Credit Card Cases! Pretty Quaker motifs, fun American Traditional things, too... just enjoy the artwork of Cathy Campbell! |
Love To One from Primitive Traditions
'Love to One, Friendship to Many, Good Will to All.' Primitive Traditions has a lovely new pastoral scene, stitched entirely in Crescent and Gentle art overdyeds. Offered as the chart, it measures 180x 90, worked completely in Cross Stitch with touches of a few straight stitches for effect. The colors and content of the picture are what draws you to this... it is so quaint, so restful, it looks like a page from my calendar!!!

Abigail Colby's Work BasketPrimitive Traditions has designed a fantastic Quaker Sewing Basket Set of designs... and I've patiently waited for the *right* baskets to arrive before showing it to you! This is an awesome set, a basket topper, stitching for the underside of the basket top, and 6 little pieces to store inside! Offered in 3 separate charts, the 8-inch, (5-inch high, swing handle) round Olde Colonial Nantucket Sewing Basket is offered separately. (Basket has no lid... you stitch and assemble that part.) Abigail's basket top design is full of her favorite Quaker motifs -- you'll notice that they 'wrap off' the edges of the topper -- which gives you the impression of upholstered fabric. Stitched on 40ct linen in Belle Soie Silks, you'll need 1/4 yard to complete all the matching pieces, offered in the other charts.
A Cheerful Mind
This is the featured design INSIDE the basket on the UNDERSIDE of the lid. Suitable for framing -- just by itself, it does make a cool interior for Abigail's Work Basket. The whole piece is stitched over one thread on 40ct... stitch count of 240 x 240... so be aware of that. Your basket will be lovely if you choose not to include this part... it is only cross stitch with one ply of thread, and if you couldn't do all of it... at least you have a shape and lots of ideas for using *creative license* to line the interior of your basket lid.
Abigail's Work Basket Accessories
A Pyn Log, Needle Pocket, Thread Pocket, Quick Start Board, Scissor Keep and Biscornu Scissor Fob. All coordinate with the Colby Work Basket... this is a *charming set* of little whatnots!!! Worked with Belle Soie of Fawn, Cinnamon Stick, Espresso and Baguette, all six charts and finishing instructions are included in this chart pack. You could simply stitch these... and not 'house them' in the basket... if time or budget do not permit!!

Bargello Pocket NeedfulsThis is a set of three pieces for your purse; a Card Purse, Checkbook Keeper and Spectacle Pocket! Each is offered as it's separate chart, and is a study in Flame Stitch, which is also known as Bargello. Simple satin stitches... what makes these fun, are the different patterns of the waves, and the color shading in each of the rows. All done with Satin Stitches, you can work these on linen, aida, OR needlepoint canvas, in any number of different threads and color choices! You'll want to enlarge the charts to highlight the rows you've already done... that makes Bargello so much easier to keep track of! Finishing instructions included for the various pieces, as well.

The Florentine Borders Sewing ChestOnce again, Cathy Campbell of Primitive Traditions has out-done herself with a stunning sewing chest design! Originally offered as a teaching piece, I've been waiting 3 years for her to release this!!!! (every
market... my plea persisted...!) Your hand-painted 9 x 6 x 6 faux-finished chest features little ball feet and a lift-off lid. The Florentine Borders cover the entire outside top (solid stitching), and are worked in Crosses and Flame Stitch. Next, the interior of the top features the Needles and Pins verse with little sampler beside the words. A pin cushion and scissor pocket! Inside the chest, all the sides are decorated with more Flame and flower borders. Bottom piece features a sampler motif with room for your
initials. Cathy gives you pages and pages of extra alphabets and motifs in here, in case you want something else in the bottom of your exquisite little chest. The entire thing is stitched on 36ct Lakeside Linens Light Examplar Linen (piece placement guide is included) in 11 different shades of Needlepoint silks of yellow, blue, green taupe and brown. (If those colors aren't your favorite, you can change them... but wait till you get the chart to study the stitch patterns.) You will need to enlarge the graphs to see all the tightly packed symbols that give this piece so much movement, pattern and awesome impact!!!
IMPORTANT! This item is now retired. Stock is limited, so if you want one, now is the time! When they're gone, they're gone!

Sarah Elliott, The Sewing Chest of a Nantucket Sister Sailor A STUNNING piece... a sewing chest inspired by the diaries of women who went whaling with their husbands in the early 1800's. Called 'Sailing Sisters,' they endured years at sea away from their families accompanying their husbands on the long, arduous voyages of whale hunting around Cape Horn, into the South Pacific, around the Hawaiian Islands, up to Alaska and on to China! Although Sarah Elliott is a fictional lady... her chest is steeped in rich history of the day.
Offered charts, Sarah's sewing chest consists of an exquisite harbor scene on the chest top -- you can see the checkerboard water and the tall ship. (Lovely blues, teals, bricks, greys and whitewashed sands...) It speaks of the sailor leaving his home, remembering family 'with a tear.' Next, there is a lining to the interior top of the chest -- 'Forget Me Not.' Each of the four interior sides features stitching -- the two longer sides feature pockets with stitched fronts that hold precious locks of hair or needlework tools. (I think one of our pics shows the pockets very well.) There are coordinating needle pages, a Biscornu pin cushion -- inspired by Sarah's Quaker upbringing -- a scissor fob and case -- all decorated with mermaids and seaside motifs to match the box top.
All the stitched pieces are assembled either into the accessories or actual lining and topping pieces for the handpainted 9 x 6 x 5-1/2 matte black box. Decorated with charming metal loop-rings on the sides, and a faux lock on the front, the top piece comes off. So you can 'fit' the interior of the box, and line both the top and underside of the lid. (There is even a piece of felt included to glue onto the underside of the box!) Notice the engraved Olde Colonial Brass Ruler -- 6 inches -- included, as well as the EXQUISITE scrimshaw piece -- A Busk Bookmark -- that is decorated with a scallop shell, ropes, tall ships, the sun, a mermaid, sea monsters, Nantucket baskets and a mariner's star. There is so much detail in here... that even on the scissor pocket piece, the three sailors all have different haircuts!!! (French Knots and little Straight Stitches!!!)
There are finishing instructions throughout... I love the page telling the story of the piece... you get the placement guide for all the stitched
pieces on the main linen cut, and since everything is stitched in DMC, Crescent Colours and Sampler Threads... your stash is waiting with the threads!!! Lots of chart enlargements, great finishing steps and hints... we are even treated to a bibliography of resource and historical reading about whaling!!!
Package includes the charts and finishing instructions, the hand-painted chest, the scrimshaw piece (the size of a tongue depressor!), the engraved brass ruler, a sterling whale charm, button (an antique circa 1850 bone button!) and felt for the trunk bottom. Available separately is the 1/2 yard cut of Lakeside Linens 36ct Mourning Dove Linen, and any flosses you don't already own. This piece is simply stunning! I have a hard time describing its charm! The colors are what you'd expect from a seaside, distressed and weathered scenario... and together with the antiqued loops on either side of the trunk... it presents itself as a miniature, historic picture -- preserved through your needlework -- a glimpse into the past -- a glimpse into the life of another needlewoman

Quaker Pocket NeedfulsA Spectacle Case, Card Purse and Checkbook Keeper trio of stitched organizers... each of the three pieces is offered in its own chart-pack. Stitched in Crescent's Belle Soie Silks of Red Fox, Espresso and Teddy Bear, they are actually Quaker Samplers that are finished into 'somethings!' The Spectacle Case actually stitches into a 6-1/2 in square piece over 2 on 40ct. The Card Purse is a lovely piece that is folded into thirds. It measures approx 4-1/2 x 8-1/2... and if you don't fold it, you'll need to reverse the direction of the center panel -- so all three
face the same direction. Third is the Checkbook Keeper -- it finishes into
a 6-1/2 x 7 piece -- simply stitch your initials 'right-side-up!' Acorns, swans, trees, flowers and urns... all three of these are kind of too pretty to hide in your purse! They need a pretty basket to sit in! There is also a new trio of Ladyes Pocket Needfuls -- houses and more traditional sampler motifs in that set, so scroll around to see them all!

Ladyes Pocket NeedfulsJust like our Quaker Needfuls, Primitive Traditions brings us this classic set of Spectacle Case, Card Purse and Checkbook Keeper. All offered as their individual charts, all stitched on a 40ct linen over two threads, these are stitched in a dozen different colors of DMC floss. Taupes, browns, golds, cinnamon, moss and russet reds, the colors are simply lovely! Suitable for framing, if you like, the finishing of these into the little cases is not hard, nothing fussy or advanced. Imagine having that lovely glasses case to protect your glasses! (Fun gifts for stitching friends!!!)

Lets Dance by the Light of the MoonA charming evening scene... all the animals are coming out by the light of the moon to dance and play! Offered as a chart, this is stitched with Crescent Colours and Gentle Art overdyed flosses on a light or dusky blue
linen of your choice! You DO need to notice that the animals aren't the
only ones 'up to something'! Notice that upstairs bedroom light??? When stitched on 40ct, this fits into a little bitty 5 x 7 frame!
|
American LogGosh, this is so cool!!! The tall, skinny log cabin is stitched in a medley of Weeks and Gentle Art overdyed flosses. The sawtooth border is made up of Satin Stitches, but the rest is simple Cross. The logs in the cabin are so horizontal... the trees and the flag so vertical... this is simply charming!!!!! Another piece that fits into a dinky 5 x 7 frame if you work it on 40ct... it'll be just as neat if your eyes demand a larger fabric! Offered as a chart.

The Shelter of Each OtherWhat a great friendship verse; 'How prized and esteemed is a Friend, on whom we may ever depend. Our joys when extended, increase. Our griefs when divided, are hushed into Peace. Dedicated to Cathy's mother... you'll find both their initials in the cartouche area at the bottom. Pretty overdyeds of Schneckley, Forest Glade, Gold Leaf, Maple Syrup, Cinnamon and Nutmeg... it sounds good enough to eat! Offered as the chart, this CAN fit into a 5 x 7 if you stitch it over one on 36ct. Otherwise... a nice 32ct Belfast will produce a 9-1/2 x 14 sampler.
